How many times have you tried a diet or workout routine that always seems to be ridiculously impossible to stay on long term?
Yes, you! Raise your hand.
We have all been there and there’s no shame in admitting it either. We get all hyped up and bull charge like Bald Bull from Nintendo’s Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!
Will it work? Does it work?
Like Dan John, a legendary strength coach often says, “I think everything works for about 6 weeks.” No matter what you try, if you stick to it for 6 weeks, it will work. This doesn’t mean it’s what’s good for you long term.
Basically what I’m trying to say is that a tough workout and diet is NOT the ONLY way to get results.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with doing a tough diet and workout routine. Just make sure it’s every ONCE in a LONG while.
What most people get wrong is they take this tough routine that got them results and they think it’s what they need to do ALL THE TIME to get results.
When you live a busy life, these long or demanding workouts soon become difficult to fit into your schedule. Plus, that diet you follow has too many restrictions, forcing you to eat all kinds of things you don’t enjoy.
So, what do you do?
You eventually give up and fall back into the comfortable routine that you were trying to change.
Does it have to be so complicated and TOUGH to lose weight and get in shape or is there a more REASONABLE way?
Dan says, “Not every good idea, training program, or diet can or should be done at once.”
He goes on to put these into 2 simple categories:
MOST of the time, we should be reasonable with both.
Dan discusses each combo here if you want to learn more.
Below I will address what I think is a REASONABLE DIET, REASONABLE WORKOUT and LIFESTYLE routine.
A reasonable diet has you:
A reasonable workout routine has you:
A reasonable lifestyle routine has you:
If you’re doing most of these things consistently… Good for you.
If you’re not or want a free 4 week program, then check this out. It’s called “A Reasonable Approach to Diet and Exercise” and you can request your copy below.
Summing it up...
Let’s try to be REASONABLE with our diet and exercise MOST of the time. I think the program I put together above is reasonable.
To some who are not even close to doing the above habits, it might be a TOUGH program. If that’s the case, make sure you start this program at a time where you aren’t super busy and stressed out. You’ll want to save your energy for this. Then get back on a reasonable routine.
For most people, the above routine is very reasonable and can be continued forever.
